Graves Mountain Retreat
When: Friday September 19 - Sunday September 21
Time: Friday September 19 - Sunday September 21
The retreat will be held Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21. Graves Mountain Lodge has been in existence since 1965 and is known for their delicious meals and their generous hospitality. The Lodge is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We will be at the Lodge at one of the most beautiful times of the year. There is abundant hiking, fishing, and lots of porches for knitting.
Our retreat will take place at the Kite House. We will have the entire house which includes 5 double guest rooms, as well as a full kitchen, living room, patios and a porch overlooking the Rose River. In addition we will be using the Redwood Suites (very close by) to house additional guests.
The room rate for double occupancy is $147 per person per day. This rate includes three meals per day at the Graves Mountain Lodge Restaurant ending with their famous fried chicken lunch on Sunday. For more information on Graves Mountain Lodge check out their website at http://www.gravesmountain.com . You can call the Lodge at 540.923.4231 to make your reservation—mention The Needle Lady Knitting Retreat.
As a welcome to the fall knitting season, we will be highlighting 2 different sweater projects for the retreat. The first is the Knit Swirl sweater that is knit in the round in one piece from the outside in. There are several different styles to choose from as well as a variety of different yarns to pick. Claudia of Claudia’s Handpainted Yarns will be with us on the retreat, and she will be there to help choose yarns, choose styles, and guide you through the “tricky bits” of the sweater construction. She has knit 5 or 6 of them and has some invaluable tips and tricks. For those of you that have already knit up a Knit Swirl, we also have the “Impressionist Swing Jacket” designed by Laura Bryant of Prism Yarns. This is a side to side knitted jacket featuring short rows and color changes. It’s a very elegant piece that will be perfect for the holidays. It is knit with 3 strands of the Delicato (lace weight tencel) on a size 8 needle—a pretty quick knit.
We try to keep a balance with these retreats between providing teaching opportunities while keeping the schedule open enough that we could all relax and knit together. If neither of these projects interest you, we encourage you to bring along any project of your own choice or we can help you find one. We will have three teachers on the retreat, Claudia, Susan and I, so you can get plenty of help on whatever you are working on. We will come fully armed with models and yarn.
We will also have the Trunk Show from Sandra McIver’s Knit Swirl book at the retreat. You will be able to try on many of the models in the book and decide on Style, color and weight. In addition we will have lots of Impressionist kits and Delicato colors from Laura Bryant at Prism yarns to tempt you. Perhaps best of all, you will be able to shop for Claudia’s yarn to your heart’s content—we will have more yarn than you can imagine.
The weekend will open with lunch on Friday. Lunch is served from 12 to 1:30. Friday afternoon will be relaxed as people will be arriving at all hours on Friday. We will have a wine and cheese reception Friday at The Kite House followed by dinner. After dinner we will reconvene at the Kite House where we can knit, try on models and plan our projects for Saturday. At that time you will be able to both choose a project and yarn for your project.
Class will take place in The Kite House, but weather permitting we can move the tables outside to enjoy the beautiful Blue Ridge views.
Several participants are bringing spouses to enjoy hiking and the surroundings while they knit. All are welcome. Since you are making your own room reservations, you can make the arrangements that are suitable for your situation.
The cost of the retreat weekend is $175. Payment of the fee reserves your spot! You will be responsible for booking and paying for your own room at Graves Mountain Lodge. We have reserved the Kite House which can sleep 10 or 12 people. The Redwood Suites are located very close to The Kite House and there are also rooms available there. Agin, the Graves Mountain Lodge phone number is 540.923.4231. When making your reservation, mention The Needle Lady Knitting Retreat.
Picture yourself here in early Fall!
For any of you that will be traveling from out of town, we invite you to come to Charlottesville on Thursday and spend the day in our lovely town. We can help to find you a hotel room for Thursday night if you would like. The Needle Lady is open until 8pm on Thursday nights, so we’d love to have you join us for Knit Night. Graves Mountain Lodge is a lovely 60 minute drive from Charlottesville.
